THE SOUQ

  1. In the Souq I tried to take picture from different angle so that I can achieve a variety of images. But after taking pictures I realized my main focus on those pictures were mainly on Lanterns. The lanterns pictures are all taken from different angle to give it an interesting view.

2. Lanterns were one of the things that caught my eyes straight away, this is because they are so colourful and really stands out in those shops. Normally you see the shops and they are so dull so when the Lanterns are light up it really makes it stand out

3. As well as focusing on Lanterns I tried to focus on mini gifts. This is because these gifts are so eye catching so when I take a picture it really stands out. When I am taking pictures of the gifts I tend to focus on taking the image as a zoom image so it can really be focused on the image itself and not the surroundings

THE JOURNEY OF CREATING  MY FINAL PIECE

This is the picture I took and I  will work with from now on to create my final piece. I chose this picture because I feel like I can develop it into something more.

Light  can represents the truth because light  is revealed through those lanterns. Light can mean happiness, joyfulness, or even a new start or beginning. Sometimes it can mean hope, when there is light there is always hope.  Love and purity  can also represent light.

Step 1: Creating Boundaries

Step 2: Consume Everything

Step 3: Finishing of the Piece

My idea was to create an image out of the picture that I  took from the Souq. I have a few for my picture.

The first one is, its going to be a picture  of an eye. It will only include one eye, eyebrow and the side of the nose. On the eye there will be a family holding hands walking into the eye. Near the eyebrow area I will put the sun there, this is to represent the lanterns. In this concept I made the lanterns mean joyfulness, new beginning and happiness (family). I will most probably paint the eye with colour and pencils. The sun and the family members will be glazed so it will stand out.

My second idea was technically the same as the first one but instead of drawing the sun it will be lanterns hanging from the eyebrow. This is because we had a discussion in class about our ides and what we would do. After discussing my idea to the class some people did not really understand my idea completely or they got confused. They misunderstood everything except for the fact that I will not be adding in the lantern, so I will be represent my idea with the sun family and bright colours to make sure it shows brightness and happiness. Then brightness and happiness will represent Lanterns. After discussing my ideas some people suggested that I needed to add colour in which I will but I did not mention it as I don't really which colour will go where.  And since my idea was generated from the lantern picture, they suggested that putting in the lanterns could maybe make the audience understand my piece more.

EXPERIMENTING

I have just started to play with my idea  by drawing out a bunch of things. On the first part of the page (right) I decided to draw different type of light in different style. I decided to draw different styles of light to see which one I will add and fits best in the final painting. But then I had a better idea of how to draw the lights, I would make the shape of each lights have a meaning. For instance I could draw a dove; dove could represent peace.

http://www.whats-your-sign.com/dove-symbolism.html

The picture on the right of the eye is my starter. In this picture I tried to make it very symbolism by adding in the Dove, Heart, Globe and a family right in the middle of the eye. This is because I want all of those to symbolize light, peace and happiness. As you look closely to the picture you can see that there are feathers falling off from the dove, hanging underneath the lantern and the globe. What feather represents is that it deals with ascension ( the act of rising to an important position or a higher level) and spiritual evolution to a higher plane. I really like what feather represent because I feel it really goes on with the the symbolism; peace.

With the 3rd picture I have coloured in and outline the eye in black to make it stand out. The skin tone is peachy and I try to distribute the different tone of peachyness in each areas. To the right side of the painting I tried to make it dark and to the right side I did it really lightly so there is a contrast. I also have tried to add in freckles as I feel that will also stand out. The eyelashes will also be outline in black to also stand out.

This is what it looks like when completed. Freckles are distributed all over the eyes and a few over the eyes. Different shapes of lantern hanging over eyes with feathers falling off them. I really wanted the feather to stand out so I painted it in  white tone and outlined it in black. I also tried to use a variety of colours in the lanterns as they are normally bright and colourful.

On this I came up with the idea of wanting to make it made out of glass. Glass because it will then give an effect of lanterns and light. On the pictures I started adding in pieces of  thin glass and used glass paint to colour it in and help it stick. There are a few work done on the eyebrows, right cheek and on the sands which is inside the eye. Look closely into the white bit of the eye and you will see glass texture which I felt was done really well. With my final piece I want it to be done similar to this.

Or I might have different layer of glass of my picture.

INSPIRATION

After coming up with my ideas I started researching to see what could help be inspired to do my final piece. Art work that I really is done by Dustin Yellin. Dustin Yellin is an author, artist, and futurist living in Brooklyn, New York. He is best known for sculptural paintings that use multiple layers of glass, each covered in detailed imagery, to create a single intricate, three-dimensional collage.

I like the idea of layering my work because it seems to be really unique and the work that he creates does really look amazing.

After finishing off my draft I have decided fully what my final piece is going to be. I experimented by

1. Using Broken glass to put on my work

2. Use glass paint and painted my work

3. Painting on different layer of glass and putting it on top of each other.

For the first one it wasn't as successful as I thought it would be. The glass that I used was very thin and I had to cut out the shapes. and I had to put glass paint on it to make it stay. But it did ended up falling off again eventually

For the second one: glass paint o my work. This wasn't as bad as the first one but its also not the best. The glass paint are very see through so when I painted it onto my work the colour was almost invisible. So I had to acrylic paint the picture then paint the glass on top. It did end up ruining my work because the glass paint and acrylic paint had different shade. In acrylic paint it is very specific shades and in glass paint it is just ordinary colours. I liked the way acrylic paint makes my artwork look but after I put the glass paint on it looked really bad.

For the last experiment  what I did was painting on the glass but with different shades and colours in each glass piece. The glass paint was thin so I didn't like it and once I put all the paintings together, the colours seemed to be blended in and turned black because I didn't wait for the paint to dry.

I started my final piece on a piece on board in A4 size. The board was black so I had to draw my picture on it before painting. Drawing the picture precisely took me the whole lesson. My final idea was to paint it and put glass on top and my final product turned out to be better than I expected it to be.

After drawing my picture I started painting onto it with acrylic paint. Most of the drawing had to be repainted into 3-4 layers once its dry. The process was really long but it went really well.

On the right there are 2 pictures of an eye which I painted in before painting on my final piece. I did this to make sure I make no mistake on the final piece. I found it easier than I thought  to paint an eye while I was practicing. But it was very difficult to make the flesh tone all different around the eye.

Once I did it on the final piece it was difficult because I had to paint it on a bigger surface, so I did it really slowly. I made my eye in the final piece brown because it goes in with the skin tone colour.

This is a before and after of the eye painting. On the left everything else is painted except for the eye ball. And then on the right the eyeball is painted brown and after the paint dried broken glass was put on the eye ball. I really like this because it makes it look more abstract. My painting is very simple and not full of meaning  and the glass I feel makes it looks more meaningful.I did also have glass on the eyebrows but it didn't contrast with the colours so I took it off.

This is the final piece finished and Framed. I really liked how the glass turned out,I like my eye colour as I found it very challenging to do.I also outlined the symbols  above the eye to make it standout. But for next time I feel like I need to change up the colour of the skin tone in different areas.

This picture on the left shows an analysis of 'The weeping women' by Pablo Picasso. This is done my Elinice and I.

On this poster we had to Analyse  our initial response to this image; how it makes us feel emotionally and visually. We also had to research the image and the background of it as well as the Artist.
